Getting to know Stephen

Can you briefly describe your primary areas of focus or leadership within technology and AI?

I lead digital product and service development for the commercial division of Syneos Health. This includes deployment solutions, learning solutions, REMS (Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies), recruiting, medical affairs, communications and consulting practices. My leadership is centered on improving healthcare delivery and advancing value-based care through these technology-enabled solutions. Much of my career has been developing innovative digital health products and services.

What unique perspective or expertise do you bring to Syneos Health’s innovation efforts?

My unique perspective comes from having created solutions across many different healthcare verticals, including the payer, biopharma (spanning clinical, pre-clinical, commercial and manufacturing), physician practice and hospital sectors. This broad experience provides me with a holistic view of the healthcare ecosystem. This is combined with a passion for conceptualizing and executing go-to-market strategies for new ventures. As a founder member of the innovation groups at two Fortune 50 companies, Merck and Comcast, I have direct experience fostering innovation from the ground up to create products that gain national recognition. This entrepreneurial mindset, coupled with my focus on building "products that people love," allows me to bring a well-rounded and strategic view to our innovation efforts. My certification as a Six Sigma Black Belt and Change Management Practitioner also informs my approach to driving effective and scalable change.

How do you see AI and digital transformation shaping the future of Syneos Health and the broader life sciences industry?

I believe AI and digital transformation will become the fundamental operating system for the life sciences industry. I envision a future where AI agents are not just tools but are autonomous, interconnected collaborators embedded in every business process, from R&D to supply chain. This will allow companies like Syneos Health to operate with unprecedented speed and precision, ultimately accelerating the delivery of therapies to patients who need them.

Which recent and upcoming technology initiatives or solutions are you most excited about and why?

What I am most excited about is the intersection of workflow and business process management methodology with LLMs and other AI models. These workflows truly help people bring their work to the next level, focusing on strategy and bringing impact at a much quicker pace. The convergence of non-deterministic models like LLMs that unlock unstructured data and the value of combining it with structured data is transformative. The advancements from LLMs and media—whether it's audio, video, images, or software designs—help unlock opportunities for creativity that were previously out of reach for people without direct experience.

What role does ethical AI and governance play in your approach to technology development and deployment?

Ethical AI and governance are non-negotiable foundations of my approach. We must develop AI responsibly, prioritizing fairness, transparency and accountability. I advocate for using AI as a collaborative tool that augments human creativity and insight, not one that replaces it. This means actively working to mitigate bias in our models and ensuring robust governance is in place, with specialists dedicated to compliance and risk mitigation. It's about blending the power of machine learning with the essential, lived experience that only humans can provide.

What motivates you most about your work in technology and AI?

I am most motivated by the opportunity to create products that people truly love to use and that deliver real-world value. My passion lies in the entire lifecycle of innovation, from conceptualizing a new idea to building a successful go-to-market strategy. Seeing a technology solution solve a complex problem and make a tangible difference in the healthcare landscape is what drives me every day.

Can you share a personal insight or passion that shaped your career journey?

A book that has profoundly shaped my professional philosophy is "The Lean Startup" by Eric Ries. I draw a great deal of inspiration from its core principles. Eric’s emphasis on achieving product/market fit and the discipline of ensuring that investment in feature development is always tied to customer value—and what they are willing to pay for—is a constant guide for me. This aligns with my career focus on innovation and entrepreneurship, and also my commitment to social impact, highlighted by my role as chairman of the board at Easter Seals New Jersey, a position I held for over a decade.
